Hi classmates!

This is the summary about the last lesson (April 3rd).

At first, we did the exercises: 1a on page 58 and 1, 3 (practice) and 1 (vocabulary) on page 59.

In these exercises we practiced the perfect tenses for a past, present or future situation. You can see a very complete explanation on page 146. The most important thing about this topic is that we should distinguish well when we want to link two points in time or we want to speak about a concrete time.

       ___*_________________*___          ______________*____
ß Linking two points in time à                                           concrete time

Perfect tenses link two points in time. They show actions before a particular time in the present, past or future.

The film had already started, when I arrived.

________*_________________________*_______________*______
                                           The film started                        I arrived
                                           Before the past                          Past                   now
ß    Linking two points in time   à

About this à HOMEWORK: Practice 1, page 146.

The answers of exercise 1 (vocabulary) on page 59 are:
1.      B / 2. I / 3. H / 4. F / 5. C / 6. J / 7. M / 8. L / 9. K / 10. G / 11. E / 12. A / 13. D

- Differences between within and by:
·         Within à en el plazo de… (con sentido de duración, rango)
Within 20 years, we will have gone to Mars.
(En el plazo de 20 años, habremos ido a Marte)
·         By à para X tiempo…(en el sentido de momento final
By 2020, we will have gone to Mars.
(Para el 2020, habremos ido a Marte)
Watch out!: Both expressions have a similar meaning in Spanish and English, but there is a little difference of meaning. For example, it´s wrong to put Within 2020… en el plazo 2020 or By 20 years… para 20 años.

- Middle position of an adverb:
·         We will probably have found a cure for cancer
·         We will have probably found a cure for cancer.
There isn´t problem. In both situations, we have the same meaning.

- Vocabulary:
·         A shortage à una escasez/falta (a shortage +of time, una escasez/falta de tiempo)
There's a shortage of food and shelter in the refugee camps.
·         Outage à un corte de algo (normalmente de suministros: luz, agua, etc.)
The radio news reported power outages affecting 50 homes.
·         Unbearable à insufrible, insoportable, inaguantable.
The atmosphere at work at the moment is quite unbearable
·         Approach à enfoque/tratamiento de algo, aproximación.
Michael is always very logical in his approach
Michael es muy lógico en su enfoque (tratamiento de algo, planteamiento)
·         To approah à acercarse a algo (se acercan las vacaciones, la hora de comer…)
I see it's approaching lunchtime, so let's take a break.

Finally, we played an “EOI version” of Scrabble to practice perfect tenses.

This is all for now. The next summary will be done by Miguel, because when he arrived (past time), José Luis had already asked -it me +[to do it] (before the past). ;-)

See you on Tuesday, bye!
